MLL - About us

MLL as a non-profit R&D company

The Medical Laser Center Lübeck (MLL) is a non-profit research and development company with limited liability (GmbH) for optics, biophotonics and laser medicine at the BioMedTec Science Campus Lübeck. The MLL was founded in 1986 and operates in close cooperation with the Institute of Biomedical Optics of the University of Lübeck.

The MLL is financed by public national and international funds in cooperation with the industry as well as directly from industrial contract research. MLL has no public or industrial basic funding.

Our mission is the conversion of innovative ideas and scientific findings from biomedical research and engineering into new or improved medical and biomedical products for diagnostics and therapy with and for our industrial partners. This technology transfer extends over applied lab research and development and includes preclinical work, feasibility studies, and the development of prototypes for clinical trials as approved under the Medical Devices Act (MPG) with clinical partners.

We have most modern and broad equipment. In particular, we have a state-of-the-art laser system for the high-precision material processing in our portfolio. We also use state-of-the-art optical measurement techniques such as optical coherence tomography (OCT), which can be used e.g. to look into semi-transparent materials. 15 scientific and technical employees with many years of experience work in the disciplines of optics, measurement technology, production engineering, deal with regulatory issues and accompany clinical studies. We are also happy to support our industrial and clinical partners in attracting public funding for joint research and development projects.

Shareholder of the MLL GmbH:

"Optical technologies are now playing a major role in the manufacture and use of many medical devices. We look forward to sharing our many years of acquired know-how and our expertise with our cooperation partners. Particularly in the fast-growing segment of medical technology with constantly increasing demands on innovation and precision, we are pleased to accept the challenge of developing new applications and innovative products."
